- Strong obligation- comes from 'outside'- a law, a rule at school olr work, someone in authority.(e.g You have to pass a driving test if you want to drive a car.)
- don't/doesn't -absence of obligation (e.g. You don't have to do the washing-up. I've got a dishwasher)
- Have got to- more informal

- Mild obligation or advice (e.g. You should do more work)
- shouldn't- negative advice (eg. You shouldn't sit so close to the TV.)
- Opinion of a speaker with I think, I don't think (e.g. I think politicians should be more polite)

- Strong obligation-comes gfrom 'inside' the speaker. (e.g. I must have a shower)
- You must...... can express a strong suggestion. (e.g. You must see the Monet exhibition. It's wonderful)
